Designing Data Consent Management to work across the Publisher Product Ecosystem

Impact: Easier to understand mental model of consent management, greater adherence to product and company design standards.

Desktop UX  •  Data Consent  •  Systems Design  •  Cross-Platform Design

Summary

PROBLEM

With GDPR, CCPA, and other regulations rolling out, the Google ecosystem of publisher products needed a scalable way to help publishers comply with regulations and manage their various consent messages.

The publishers also needed to understand the impact of the different regulations on ad serving.

My role was to work with the existing system and improve it, as well as adapt it to AdSense-specific use cases in a way that would be minimally taxing on engineering whilst ensuring compliance with design standards.

CONTRIBUTIONS

  • Evaluated the existing design across 5 products and suggested improvements in line with Google's company design standards

  • Worked closely with engineering on a design model that would work flexibly to meet particular product needs across the board

  • Ensured high design quality and compliance with accessibility standards for the product

IMPACT

  • Improved design quality and adherence to design standards across the ecosystem

  • Timely launches in particular products

  • Streamlined user journeys that ensured maintenance of the same mental models across the product
